You’ll need to take preventive anti-malaria medication, pack heavy-duty bug spray, and prepare for some sticky afternoons.
- Western Cape: December is the dry, warm summer season. Every private reserve in the region (like Aquila, Sanbona, or Gondwana) is completely malaria-free. If you’re travelling with young kids or want to skip the malaria meds, this is a major win.

- Kruger National Park: Reaching Kruger is a 6-hour drive from Johannesburg or a domestic flight into local airports like Skukuza or Nelspruit. It’s a dedicated destination on its own that typically needs at least 3 to 4 days to justify the travel time.

It’s worth noting that Kruger experienced severe, record-breaking summer flooding earlier this year (2026). Massive rainfall across Limpopo and Mpumalanga caused several major rivers to burst their banks, washing away bridges and damaging key infrastructure.
While southern gates and main camps have since reopened, repairs to washed-out bridges and northern access roads are still an ongoing project.
